Antigonish Art on Main – Summer 2018

Stroll along Main Street Antigonish and enjoy the summer art scene.  Antigonish is well known as a hub for the arts.

  • Red Sky Gallery. Visit this newest art gallery for a refreshing exhibit of local and Nova Scotia artists.  Paintings and drawings, pottery, jewelry, sculpture.  320 Main Street.
  • Down to Earth Art Gallery. Featuring art by Alan Syliboy, J. Franklin Wright, Kate Brown Georgallas and more. 240 Main Street.
  • Tall and Small. Great coffee shop with baked goods and lunches. Monthly changing exhibit by artists and non-profit groups. 342-2 Main Street.
  • The People’s Place Antigonish Town and County Library. Monthly changing art exhibits by local artists. Commissioned art work in and outside of the library.  Look for the silk banners in the bistro area, murals and art pieces. 283 Main Street.
  • Antigonish Art Fair. Summer art fair with artists, artisans, food and entertainment every second Friday during the summer.  June 20, July 6, 20, August 3, 17.  Chisholm Park with rain location at the new legions, St. Ninian Street.   6:30 – 9:00 PM
  • Grannies Antiques and Gifts. At the east end of town. Antiques and collectibles. 7 Adam Street.
  • Murals. Look for murals around the town.

Old Barn Gallery – Pomquet

Enjoy 5 galleries of art in a delightful farm setting with seasonal old-fashioned perennial flower gardens. In season the scent of roses fill the air.   The barn built in 1845 has a high vaulted ceiling and displays changing light and shadow on the art and studio.  The original horse stalls are converted to gallery space and Arthur Rivoire’s studio is now a gallery on the upper part of the property.   Views of Pomquet harbour and islands, and the country surroundings are visible from this upper area.

Carol Naveta Rivoire original art works and other noted artists are tastefully displayed in galleries inviting you to browse and soak in the environment.  Galleries include antiques and hand-crafted items such as rag rugs which were a home staple of the past.

The gallery is situated on the 300 acre Beaver Dam Farm, just 10 minutes from Antigonish. Chat with Carol Rivoire, artist/owner and founder of the Old Barn Gallery & Decor at Beaver Dam Farm.  She is a passionate abstract artist and collector.

It is a true experience to visit the Old Barn Gallery and the art is affordable.

Antigonish is a vibrant hub of the arts with events, exhibits, art fairs, performing arts.   Whether you are an artist yourself or enjoy participating in events there are many things to see and do. If you live in Antigonish – you’re lucky – if not – come and visit and stay a while.  Stroll around town with its colorful flower baskets and murals. Drop in to one of our many restaurants and Cafés. EVENTS & HAPPENINGS

St.FX Art Gallery Fundraiser GalaSt FX Art Gallery Fundraiser Gala 2017 will be an exciting evening for the arts. There will be a dynamic mix of Live Art, Live and Silent Auction, Reverse Raffle and Fine Art Door Prizes and an opportunity to watch artists create. The art items are from some of Nova Scotia’s finest artists and collections.  June 10. 7PM. Keating Centre, StFX. Tickets $40.

GoArts 2016 Alan Syliboy speaking at opening eventGathering of the Arts (GoArts) is an annual exhibition of regional artists’ work in the visual arts. To celebrate its 20th anniversary, GoArts will be showcasing 20 art installations in 20 unique venues around Downtown Antigonish. Opening Gala – July 4. People’s Place Library.  Exhibit continues July and August.

Antigonish Art Fair 2017Antigonish Art Fair: A fun filled family evening with a wonderful array of art, artisanal arts and crafts, multicultural foods and terrific performances. This family event includes the Creative Children’s Corner with a multicultural flavour. 2017 dates are Fridays 6 – 9 PM. June 23, July 7, 21, August 4, 18. Chisholm Park. Rain location will be announced on social media.

St. F.X. Art Gallery is an exceptional exhibit area on the campus of St Francis Xavier University. The gallery interprets a diverse range of art for community members and the public. It connects the University’s cultural life to that of the wider community through exhibitions, publications, and events and fosters an appreciation of visual arts & culture. Lyghtesome GalleryLyghtesome Gallery. The gallery established in 1975, features an outstanding collection of original works by Nova Scotia printmakers, watercolourists & oil painters, as well as award-winning pottery, wood, clay & metal sculpture, art-related books & cards, and Celtic artwork. It represents artists Anna Syperek, Linda Johns and many others. Open year round.  166 Main St. Mon–Sat 10am–5pm.

Halifax Library

The Amazing Halifax Central Library

 

 

It was my first time to visit the new Halifax Central Library. The space is spectacular with the central staircases creating angles and patterns of light and shadow and giving the overall effect of expansiveness and encouraging exploration.

The 5 storeys are easily accessible via the elevators. I decided to start at the top and work my way down. The top floor has a green area roof garden with views of Halifax. The Pavia Gallery Espresso Bar and Café rooftop patio with outdoor and indoor tables make a great place for a snack or cup of coffee. Comfortable lounge chairs for reading with a view and the adult fiction section complete this floor.

Every floor has an information desk with helpful staff. Computers and study areas, a changing use of space on each of the floors make the space inviting and interesting.

On the fourth floor you find the local history room, African History and culture, and Adult non-fiction. Quiet reading and study areas and meeting rooms of various sizes that can be reserved are found throughout the library.

The third floor is the home of the First Nations Circle. Adult magazines, multilingual materials, a Literacy Collection are found on this floor.

The second floor includes the children’s and teens and preschool areas. A media studio and creative lab and many computers are throughout the area.

The first floor entrance way has the Pavia Gallery Espresso Bar on the right with a selection of food and drink. To the left is a large comfortable reading area with magazines and selected collections for easy browsing. The art installation of 5000 paintings on the size of the traditional library card is amazing. These are all by the artist Cliff Eyland.  The Paul O’Reagan Hall (seating 307) hosts events and performances.

The Halifax Central Library is well worth a visit and if you live in the area a great community hub. It is wonderful to see such a community space in the heart of downtown Halifax and is not your traditional idea of a library.

Antigonish has long been a centre for the arts and artists.  In the past year there have been a lot of new additions to art exhibit spaces and the arts are flourishing.   There are many wonderful galleries and exhibits to explore and enjoy as you stroll along Main Street and then take a drive for more.  See how many you can visit and be sure and add your comments and suggest any others that you find.

Gathering of the Arts

 

 

The Gathering of the Arts, GoArts 2011 organized by Antigonish Culture Alive (ACA).  An opening Reception was held on July 4 at the Peoples’ Place Library in Antigonish. The reception celebrated the opening of the juried art exhibition.  Awards were presented to the Peoples’ Place in recognition of its support to the Arts Community. And to Michael Steinitz for his annual concert series work.   The reception was well attended and an opportunity to view the exhibits.

The juried Art Exhibit includes works from over 60 artists with a wide variety of media – oils, watercolor, pencil, photography, mixed media, textiles, quilting, sculpture, batik, weaving, and more. Art from L’Arche Horizons, Youth Art. Workshops and artist demonstrations. July 4-16, 2011

Art Walk Antigonish

 

 

For a small town, Antigonish has a lot going on in the arts.  Enjoy a walk through town sampling exhibits and art.  The culture of creative people and the support and interest of the community makes this a “happening” place in the arts.

You can do this walk over a day – or spread out your visits.  Park your car and enjoy the spring weather and stroll.  This walk goes from the West end of Main Street (the Post Office end) ending at the East end where Main Street is getting a new bridge.   This walk on Main Street of less than 1 kilometer – plus one side trip to campus will impress you with the variety and creativity of the community.  The current exhibitions listed are for May, 2011.  Check the location websites or just drop in for changes.

ASAP:  All of Us Society for Art Presentation – A small new gallery space currently exhibiting paintings, photography and drawings from 5 art students of St FX – Kara Grant, Steve Scannell, Kevin MacIssac, Travis Myette, and TJ Ediger.  I enjoyed the recent gallery opening and getting to meet the next generation artists.  This place is at the back of the white building between the Post Office and Shoppers.   The summer hours are not posted yet – just see if the door is open and go down the stairs.  Kara Grant will be artist in residence till August.  The Studio, 319 Main St.

People’s Place Library – The opening is scheduled for May 24.  Art is an important and integral part of the new library complex.  Fourteen public art pieces will be permanently located in both the interior and exterior spaces of the new library. These include paintings, murals, textiles, sculptures, and more by local artists and artisans. St FX Gallery – The current exhibit is by Julia Redgrave “Life at the Edge” – a series of eighteen large paintings moving through the seasons and each featuring a letter and theme of Life on the Edge. The colours and style are gripping and there is also on display smaller print reproductions.
